History

Sensefinity’s story started in 2015 near Lisbon, Portugal. At this time, Orlando Remédios was Head of the Machine to Machine department of Nokia, leading 300 people across Portugal, Finland and India. Tiago Andrade, an Internet of Things developer expert graduated from the prestigious Coimbra university in Computer Science, were among Orlando’s team members. That is when Kuhne+Nagel, one of the world's leading logistics providers, made the request to Nokia to get a tracking solution of their goods, even when on sea. The Finnish giant could not answer this demand at a reasonable price.

Orlando, Marco and Tiago were convinced they were able to do it. Thus, they got Tiago Nascimento, a graduate from ISEL, on board, and founded Sensefinity, an IoT start-up. The solution brought by the freshly created company allowed to cater for the logistic company’s needs. Sensefinity provided them with a reliable, secured and affordable system tracking their goods everywhere worldwide by GSM, in real time, with a set of applications to visualise the collected data and send notifications and alerts in case of problems. Soon after, the Sensefinity’s founders realised that their product was actually so complete and adaptable, that it would help a lot of other businesses, from a large spectrum of industries.

A complete and modular solution - from hardware to software

Indeed, Sensefinity’s offer consists of a full-stack solution, from the hardware, to a secured cloud with an API, to tailor-made mobile and web applications. Just a hand of companies worldwide are able to provide the complete chain of the solution. Moreover, the modularity of Sensefinity’s system makes it perfect for all size of businesses. It serves the small restaurants with no IT which needs to monitor the temperature of its fridges, to send alerts in case of problems on the mobile phone of its employees, and to receive monthly HACCP reports by emails. But Sensefinity is also a reliable and expert partner to big industrial companies, providing them with hardware-as-service, integrated to their own clouds and applications, such as Salesforce.

The sensoroid: the capabilities of a sensor + a beacon, and more

Not only the four founders of Lisbon succeeded to provide this rare total and modular solution, but they also invented an unique and proprietary technology: the Sensoroid. The Sensoroid has the same capabilities as a sensor, it can measure various parameters such as the temperature, the pressure, the humidity, etc… and transmits constantly its precise location. However, the particularity of the Sensoroid is that it can do much more than a sensor. It also acts as a smart beacon. Not only the Sensoroid can send information, like a beacon do, but it can also receive information! Indeed, the Sensoroid is Bluetooth retro-compatible, meaning that it can communicate with any BLE4.0 device, like smartphones, and that it can be updated remotely any time.

Last, but not least, the Sensoroids, when several, automatically recognizes each other and create seamlessly a mesh network among them. Absolutely no configuration is required. Thus, Sensefinity totally revolutionizes the way IoT is done today. The number of gateways needed, and the associated costs, falls dramatically. Furthermore, the number of application and possibilities become infinite. New physical parameters to measure, like CO2, can be added anytime. New ways of interacting with people appear, as the Sensoroids can directly communicate with our smartphones. Analytics and application always more innovative can be directly uploaded on them. The imagination of the developers become the only limit.

This disruptive solution allowed Sensefinity to win the trust of clients worldwide.
